Teacher Training FAQ's

Committing to a 200-hour yoga teacher training is a big deal!  We want to make sure all your questions are answered before you submit your application. If your questions aren't answered below, please contact us for more information. Namaste'

What style of yoga does your training teach?

A:  We teach a Hatha Vinyasa blend, also including Gentle/Restorative yoga.  We are very safety-focused and believe in creating a practice suited to each individual student.

Are you registered with Yoga Alliance?

A:  Yes.  We are a Registered Yoga School (RYS) at the 200 hour level.  This means that when you complete our program, you will be eligible to apply with Yoga Alliance as a Registered Yoga Teacher (RYT).

I don't know if I want to teach yoga, but I want to deepen my practice & understanding of yoga. Is this program for me?

A:  It could be.  Our program offers an opportunity for deep transformation.  Whether you teach or not, your knowledge base and practice experience will grow exponentially during the course of our program.  We are also happy to point you in the direction of other programs if this one isn't for you!

Am I registered with Yoga Alliance when I complete this program?

A:  No.  Registering with Yoga Alliance is a separate process than taking a 200 RYT training program.  Our yoga school is nationally registered with Yoga Alliance (www.yogaalliance.org), which means if you choose to register with Yoga Alliance, you are eligible to do so upon completion of our program.

How are you qualified to run this sort of program?

A:  To be an RYS (Registered Yoga School), the Program Director must be registered through Yoga Alliance as an E-RYT 200.  Our school had to apply and meet all the criteria required to be a Registered Yoga School (RYS 200).  Our Program Director, Sara Hawson, has been assisting in, and directing, training programs since 2007.  The Mellow Monkey began its own training program in 2009.

I have a pre-planned event that I can't miss. It will interfere with one of the training days.  Can I still apply?

A:  Yes.  You are allowed 1 make-up day free-of-charge (up to 8 classroom hours).  You must let us know in advance.  The make up day is pre-planned and is typically on the first weekend after the program ends.  Any additional make-up hours must be made up with an additional fee.

Will the philosophies you teach conflict with my religion?

What we offer is a professional training covering the 8-limbs of yoga. We ask that our applicants have enough prior yoga experience that you've assimilated how yoga, including its philosophies and practices, relates to you.  We are looking for students who have already come to an inner agreement about the benefit and validity of yoga as a lifestyle choice. Please connect with us before applying if you have concerns.

Are there actually jobs for yoga teachers out there?  And can I make money teaching?

In a nutshell, yes! Although we can't guarantee your professional success, the majority of our graduates have gone on to teach in a variety of locations, publicly and privately.  As far as potential income, I can definitely admit that to make a full-time living in the Spokane area as a yoga teacher is not common. However, it is very possible to create a flexible schedule and enjoy an additional income through your teaching.

An additional note on "money":  I know a lot of people debate whether the cost of such a big training is financially "worth it". It's not my job to talk you into spending your money. Only you can decide for yourself whether your goals, desires, priorities, and resources lead you down this path. This is one of those "talk to you heart about it" type situations. Good luck & Namaste!

I have a ton of questions, can I call you?

A:  ABSOLUTELY!  Call or email.  Committing your time, energy, and money into this sort of a program is a huge step and we want to make sure that it is the right program for you before you apply.

You cannot do yoga.  Yoga is your natural state.  What you can do are yoga exercises, which may reveal to you where you are resisting your natural state.
